Cessnock City Library – Kids, Teens and ParentTV

Children and teenagers can take part in regular library activities and use age-appropriate digital resources. Parents and carers who are library members can also access ParentTV parenting resources with their library card. Cessnock Library is at 65–67 Vincent Street and opens from 9am Monday to Saturday. Cessnock Multipurpose Children’s Centre – Playgroup at Cessnock

Families can join a free playgroup on Mondays from 10am to 11am during school terms. Open to parents with children of all ages, sessions include painting, playdough, craft, stories, music, building and outdoor play, with early childhood educators facilitating. Playgroup meets at the CMCC OOSH building, 5 Dudley Street.

PCYC Cessnock – Children’s and youth activities

PCYC Cessnock provides several options for active and social time, including junior boxing for ages 8–13 and U-Nites for young people aged 10–18. Its school-holiday program for children aged 5–12 combines sport with creative and STEM-style activities. Booking and enrolment are required. Cessnock Multipurpose Children’s Centre – OOSH and Vacation Care

Children from kindergarten to Year 6 can access before-school, after-school and vacation care at Dudley Street and partner school locations in Nulkaba, Bellbird and Cessnock West. Vacation Care operates during school holidays from 6.30am to 6pm. Excursion places are limited and require a signed permission note, so families should organise these early. Cessnock Multipurpose Children’s Centre – Early learning and preschool

Community-based, not-for-profit early learning options include long day care at Hall Street for children from six weeks to about five years and Dudley Street care for children from six weeks to school age. CMCC also runs a Nulkaba preschool program for children in the year before school. Families can discuss the most suitable location and program by phoning (02) 4990 2687.

Cessnock Family Support Service

Parents and carers of children aged 0–12 who live in the Cessnock local government area can seek free, confidential and voluntary support. Help may include information, counselling, advocacy and referrals, with appointments available at the centre, at home or at another suitable venue. Families can self-refer, while other people or services may refer with consent. The service works with parents and carers rather than directly with children, and registration is required for parenting programs. Phone (02) 4990 4507.

Cessnock Community Health Service – Child and Family Health

NSW Health provides Child and Family Health Services for families with children aged 0–5 through Cessnock Community Health Service on View Street. The local offering includes the New Directions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mothers and Babies Child and Family Health Service. Cessnock Youth Centre and Outreach Service (CYCOS)

Operated by Cessnock City Council, CYCOS supports young people across the Cessnock local government area through programs, partnerships and opportunities to participate. Kurri Kurri Community Services – Youth Services

Youth workers and youth case-workers assist young people and families living in the Cessnock local government area. Individual support and family capacity-building casework are available for young people aged 12–24, with self-referrals and referrals from representatives or services accepted. Referrals are currently waitlisted and triaged, while school counselling referrals must come through partner schools. Phone (02) 4004 3190.

headspace Cessnock

Young people aged 12–25 can seek early-intervention assistance covering mental health, physical health, work and study, and alcohol and other drug concerns. A family member or trusted person may help a young person make contact. Intake appointments can be booked on (02) 4993 3450 between 9am and 4.30pm; a GP mental health care plan is required to see a clinician. The centre is at 122 Vincent Street and has wheelchair access from the front.

Hunter Domestic Violence Support & Advisory Service – Jodie’s Place and support programs

Women and children experiencing or affected by domestic violence can contact this service about refuge and support options. Jodie’s Place is a refuge in Cessnock, with access managed by volunteer co-ordinators. The organisation also lists a Phoenix Group workshop and a Tuesday creative therapy group for women affected by domestic violence.
